Swear Word Recognition Task
(Part 2)

Thank you for participating in this study. The aim of the study is to investigate whether we can guess the meanings of words we don’t know, in particular, if we can guess which words are swear words in languages other than English.

This survey is best viewed on a desktop or tablet. You can complete it on a smartphone, but it is not optimised.

You may have participated in Part 1 of this study (thank you!). If so, you may still participate in part 2. There are slight changes to the instructions but the task is very similar, however, all of the words are different and there are far fewer are of them (80, rather than over 200).
To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years of age.
You will be presented with words from one language at a time and you will be asked to guess which ones are swear words. In total, you will be given words from 11 languages. The number of words you will be presented with will vary for each language, but there will always be an equal number of swear words and non-swear words. Additionally, we will also ask for some information about yourself, including how often you use certain swear words in English. In total, this study should take approximately 10 minutes of your time.
Please be aware that you will be presented with extremely strong and offensive language and if this may cause you distress you should not proceed any further. You will be given more information about the study at the end.

If you have any questions before starting the study, please contact Dr. Emily Nordmann (emily.nordmann@abdn.ac.uk).
