Questionnaire: Rewilding & Coloniality

Participation Information & Consent Form

The aim of this research is to explore whether there is a relationship between rewilding and colonial perspectives through the lens of two case studies, the Knepp Rewilding Project in South England and the Wildland rewilding initiative in the Scottish Highlands. Rewilding is most commonly defined as restoring the environment to what it may have looked like and the level of biodiversity it would have had before human interference. It typically opposes traditional conservation models that preserve what is there presently. Specifically, this project seeks to explore two research questions: What views and patterns of thinking are shaping the way rewilding is done at the Knepp Estate? & What approaches are reflected in the way rewilding is done at the Wildland Project in Scotland? This project also hopes to bring the issue of private landownership in the British countryside in the rewilding debate into its research as well.
The research is conducted by Rowan Peattie, an undergraduate student with the School of Geosciences. The results of this research will be used for an undergraduate dissertation which will be made accessible upon request via the email: u02rp22@abdn.ac.uk.

We appreciate your interest in participating in this questionnaire. We would like to invite you to take part if you are 18 years old or above. Please take some time to read the following information carefully before agreeing to participate (if you wish to) by ticking the consent boxes at the bottom of this page. Your participation in the survey is entirely voluntary, and you can opt out at any stage by closing and exiting the browser.
If you decide to take part, you will be asked to fill out an online questionnaire, which will be available to fill out until the end of November, 2025. This questionnaire can be completed on any device, however it is best filled out on a tablet, laptop or computer. The questionnaire consists of two sections, with 23 questions in total. Section 1 asks participants to select strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree or strongly disagree to indicate their agreement with six statements. Section 2 asks participants to answer two questions for each of the three images of the Knepp Rewilding Project, and then to answer two questions for each of the three statements taken from the marketing material of the Wildland rewilding initiative in the Scottish Highlands.
Participation during the questionnaire can be withdrawn at anytime. Some questions provide participants with the opportunity to elaborate on a yes or no question, but this is not a necessary part of answering these questions (in the interest of time constraints). Your answers will help us to better understand public opinion on rewilding and whether or not it is associated with colonial histories and patterns of thinking. The questionnaire should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Please be aware that after completing the questionnaire, you will not be able to withdraw your data.
Your answers will be treated confidentially and the information you provide will remain anonymous in any scholarly outputs. All data generated by the study will be securely stored at the University of Aberdeen and retained in accordance with the University of Aberdeen Research Data Management Policy for 1 year after the project end date. Your data can only be accessed by the researcher Rowan Peattie. You can also consult the University’s Privacy Notice for Research Participants for further information on how we manage your data.
The research has been approved by the School of Geosciences on the 02/09/2025.
