“Race and Trans and Nonbinary Inclusion in Mindfulness”

Worktribe ethics application 4817748

The aim of this research is to explore the experiences of Black and People of Colour (BPOC) and trans and nonbinary (TNB) experiences in mindfulness to increase access and inclusion of these communities. The project aims to provide research to the sector on the barriers and opportunities and produce evidence-based recommendations for increasing access and inclusion in mindfulness for these marginalised groups. The research is conducted by Josetta Malcolm (they/them), doctoral researcher at the School of Education, University of Aberdeen. The results of this research will be used for their doctoral thesis which will be made accessible through the University of Aberdeen’s research repository.

We appreciate your interest in participating in this online questionnaire. We would like to invite you to take part if you are:

  • Over 18
  • A UK-based person of colour and/or
  • A UK-based trans or nonbinary person
  • Have either practiced or would like to try mindfulness.

Please take some time to read the following information carefully before agreeing to participate (if you wish to) by ticking the consent boxes at the end. Your participation in the survey is entirely voluntary, and you can skip questions, or opt out at any stage by closing and exiting the browser.

If you decide to take part, you will be asked to answer a series of survey questions. Your answers will help us to see what the barriers and opportunities are for making mindfulness in the UK more accessible and relevant to BPOC and TNB people. The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Please be aware that after completing the survey, you will not be able to withdraw your data.

Your answers will be treated confidentially and the information you provide will remain anonymous in any scholarly outputs. All data generated by the study will be securely stored at the University of Aberdeen and retained in accordance with the University of Aberdeen Research Data Management Policy for five years after the project end date. Your data can only be accessed by Josetta Malcolm. You can also consult the University’s Privacy Notice for Research Participants for further information on how we manage your data.

Are there any risks associated with taking part?

Some questions and discussions of experiences may cause some distress as we are exploring the barriers and challenges of accessing mindfulness as a BPOC or TNB person. An example question would be “Describe any difficulties that you have experienced in a mindfulness setting.” Please think carefully about whether this is something you can manage. Please be conscious of the level of disclosure you choose to provide, and do not  disclose traumatic experiences likely to cause distress to yourself or the researcher. This is to ensure that we are able to emphasise the research aims of this project rather than recording historical distressing experiences. Questions are designed not to invite significant levels of disclosure. Please see below support you may wish to access:
